A fire can cause soot, smoke damage and charring to wood, brick, concrete and metal. This type of damage is unsightly and holds odor. Traditionally, the removal method has been sanding, scraping and wire brushing. With Cold Jet, this long and tedious process can be eliminated.

Cold Jet, the technological leader in the dry ice blasting industry, provides the complete blasting solution for any fire restoration project. Cold Jet has carefully considered the needs of the Restoration Professional, and has developed a system that allows for easy entry into tight places, otherwise impossible to reach, and smoke damage removal in drastically less time than any traditional removal method. No other company can provide the variety of essential nozzles and accessories to ensure removal from the multitudes of angles a restoration professional typically encounters.

Using the traditional methods, three to five technicians could complete a typical fire restoration project in five or six working days. However, with the Cold Jet dry ice blasting solution, two technicians can complete that very same job in two days. Therefore, residents have lower displacement costs and the contractor can take on more work with reduced labor costs.

The dry ice blasting process by Cold Jet can eliminate or significantly reduce the odor that is left behind by fire damage. Typically, 24 hours after blasting, the odor is undetectable. This means that the use of encapsulation can be drastically reduced in fire restoration. Cold Jet dry ice blasting provides a clean that the other methods simply cannot match.

In addition, the Cold Jet process has no secondary waste stream. So, when you are done cleaning, there is no need to go back and clean up the added mess other blasting medias, such as soda, water and sand, leave behind.

General Maintenance

Cold Jet dry ice blasting is capable of cleaning most industrial equipment, machinery, machine tools, curing presses and assembly line equipment without causing damage. Cold Jetting can eliminate significant cleaning downtime and post-cleaning start-up.

The applications that Cold Jet systems can provide a cleaning solution for are endless. Any item that is part of a production process can be cleaned on-line or during production uptime with Cold Jet dry ice blasting. Cold Jet blasting systems are designed to increase production uptime and increase the productivity of any production process, in fact no other dry ice blasting system will provide an equitable return on investment. Cold Jet systems typically pay for themselves in a matter of months, in terms of lessened scrap product and increased high quality production time.

Cold Jet dry ice blasting systems effectively and efficiently clean mixer conveyor components and oven band hoppers. In addition, Cold Jet can clean on and around hydraulic power units and electrical power and distribution components. Adhesives are easily removed by dry ice blasting, as the lowered temperature of the blasting process serves to weaken the adhesive bond. The traditional abrasive cleaning methods often generate heat and can therefore fail to effectively remove adhesives. Cold Jet dry ice blasting can be very successful in marine maintenance and upkeep as well. Cold Jet removes algae, sea slime and mussels from ship hulls and seawater intake valves far better than water blasting. The Cold Jet system is also very effective in cleaning the mechanical and electrical equipment parts in the engine room.

The removal and disposal of hazardous waste can be considered an industrial classification. With Cold Jet dry ice blasting, the cleaning media, dry ice, sublimates. Therefore the volume of hazardous materials to dispose of does not increase, and the related disposal cost does not increase either. This particular advantage of dry ice blasting is important with regards to nuclear decontamination, because the grit traditionally used to clean radioactive items becomes contaminated as well and is then much more expensive to dispose of.

Cold Jet dry ice blasting systems require less air and less ice than any other dry ice blasting system on the market, saving the customer on lifetime usage costs. In addition, Cold Jet systems produce four times less noise than other blasting systems, allowing the operator to blast during normal operation hours without implementing costly ear protection protocol.

Historical Restoration

Historical Restoration Video

Cold Jet offers restoration contractors a cleaning method that creates value for their business. No other cleaning method can uncover the detail and intricacies of historic structures with the efficiency and cleaning ability of a Cold Jet. Cold Jet Dry Ice Blasting leaves no secondary waste streams, provides drastic time savings, and eliminates the use of harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaning methods.

Watch the latest Restoration video removing lead paint from iron structures at the Utah State Capital.

Historic Restoration with Cold Jet includes a wide variety of cleaning applications and needs. Restoration contractors are using Cold Jet for lead based paint abatement, smoke damage removal, adhesive removal and reversal of aging effects, just to name a few. Cold Jet has been used in historic church restoration, the Utah State Capital Building seismic upgrade, aging marble statues, a fire damaged home from the turn of the century and many more restoration projects.

Cold Jet is the best cleaning method for restoration projects due to the need for a non-abrasive and chemical-free process in most restoration work. The goal in restoration work is to restore a structure to its original state and to uncover the underlying surfaces of the structure without causing additional damage. Cold Jet allows the restoration contractor to achieve the desired cleaning results, without damaging the substrate. Often, layers of paint and years of aging will hide the original detail on the structure. The only way to uncover this intricate detail work is with Cold Jet, no other cleaning method is able to achieve that level of clean without damaging the substrate. In fact, with Cold Jet, the operator can blast adjacent to marble, glass and onyx without causing any damage to these surfaces. The architects that specify restoration work will often not allow chemicals or abrasive cleaning methods to be used. Chemicals can leach into stone, such as marble, and abrasive cleaning methods will scratch and scar the surface being cleaned. Both chemical and traditional abrasive cleaning alters the integrity of the very surface the restorers are trying to preserve.

The absence of a secondary waste stream is another attraction to use Cold Jet for restoration work. In a project such as lead paint abatement, it is critical that the removal method be as streamlined and as carefully contained as possible. This can be achieved with Cold Jet.

Mould Remediation

Cold Jet dry ice blasting removes 100% of mould spores from wood, and it does so 60% to 300% faster than traditional cleaning methods. Cold Jetting provides complete removal even in the tight angles of trusses, around nails, wiring and all plumbing, without damage.

Dry ice blasting is rapidly increasing the amount of mould remediation projects a firm can perform, due to a 60-80% time and manpower reduction, as well as the technology's ability to thoroughly remove mould spores from wood. Add to that the ability to reach tight, confined areas; the significant lack of sanding and scraping; and no secondary waste streams, and Cold Jet dry ice technology is a business-building opportunity that has finally come of age.

The existence of mould in a building is the symptom of a much larger problem with moisture. As any mould remediator knows, eliminating the moisture problem is the only way to assure the mould will not return. Once the moisture problem has been solved, remediation of the existing mould is top priority. Mould can cause a great deal of health problems and can severely damage the integrity of a building’s structure. So, removing the mould in its entirety is vital to any mould remediation project.

The only way to ensure 100% mould spore removal from wood is through dry ice blasting. Cold Jet, the technological leader in the dry ice blasting industry, provides the complete blasting solution for any mould removal project. Cold Jet has carefully considered the needs of the mould remediation expert and has developed a system that allows for easy entry into tight places, otherwise impossible to reach, and 100% spore removal in drastically less time than any traditional removal method. No other company can provide the variety of essential nozzles and accessories to ensure complete spore removal from the multitudes of angles a mould remediator typically encounters.

Using the traditional methods of sanding and scraping a mould infested attic, three technicians would typically complete an attic job in five or six working days. However, with the Cold Jet dry ice blasting solution, two technicians can complete that very same job in two days. Therefore, residents have lower displacement costs and the remediators can take on more remediation work.

The unpleasant and uncomfortable process of squeezing into tight corners to sand the mould off of wood trusses and joists, only to have mould spores remain, is soon to become a thing of the past. Cold Jet dry ice blasting provides for complete spore removal from wood. This means that the use of biocides and encapsulation can be drastically reduced or eliminated, as these registered pesticides were used as a back-up method to kill and contain left over mould spores. However, dead mould is still allergenic and must be removed. Cold Jet removes all mould spores, so these chemicals are no longer needed.

Packaging

Cold Jet dry ice blasting has eliminated the cost of replacing the drive belts in the packaging process, as well as the down time required to replace the new belt. Cold Jetting quickly and easily removes the glue build-up from the belts without damage or wear.

Most packaging cardboard boxes are printed with a wax or clay based graphic. As boxes are transported by conveyer rollers, this box coating is rubbed off and transferred onto the rollers. The coating can build up on the rollers to a level where boxes will begin to fall off the conveyor. Traditional cleaning methods for conveyors requires dismantling every 4 to 10 days and scrubbing with solvents and brushes. The Cold Jet dry ice blasting process thoroughly cleans the wax or clay build up from the rollers while the conveyor is still assembled. Again, cleaning with dry ice blasting reduces the downtime needed for conveyor cleaning, thus increasing line productivity.

All packaged beverage containers have an ink-jet code applied for information transfer and tracking. As with most ink-jet processes, an unwanted over spray occurs on nearby machinery, conveyers, belt drives, and electronics. Consequently, the ink will redeposit onto the package and create an unacceptable finished product. The Cold Jet dry ice blasting process gently removes the ink over-spray and therefore prevents scrap or line shut-down.

As a result of Cold Jet dry ice blasting, Preform mould manufacturers have been able to reduce their production downtime by 75% or more. Cold Jet dry ice blast systems are able to clean mould surfaces while the mould is still at curing temperature in the press.

Download a recent article published in PET Planet October 2006 on Cold Jet Dry Ice Blast Cleaning for the PET Packaging Industry.

The importance of clean mould cavities is a major concern in maintaining today's high quality standards. The build-up of unwanted surface residues from either the product mix itself, mould releases or the labeling process can create various problems, ranging from product release ("knock out") to inferior product quality and possible damage to tools from over-packing and straining. In addition to maintaining the cleanliness of the moulds, the Cold Jet dry ice blasting process also reduces and in many cases eliminates the need to disassemble the moulds as is required for traditional cleaning.

Cold Jet dry ice blasting removes the waxy, paraffin build-up that can lead to blemishes (orange peel effect) on the bottles while the moulds are hot and on-line.

The manufacturing of a polyurethane foam product used in sound dampening for autos and vans leaves the manufacturer with moulds coated with an isocyanate/wax mould release. mould release build-up eventually causes "knock out" problems, and, in extreme cases, the wax release agent becomes encased in the polyurethane foam product, making the product unusable. With Cold Jet dry ice blasting, moulds are cleaned in only 15 to 20 minutes and the cavities are more thoroughly cleaned = 20 times as many moulds can be cleaned with dry ice blasting versus conventional methods. Production up time is increased by 100 to 120 hours and maintenance crews are now free to attend to other duties.

Cold Jet dry ice blasting can clean entire blow and injection mould cavities completely and effectively. Many leading blow moulding bottle manufacturers have discovered that dry ice blasting systems cut their daily mould cleaning time by about 80% simply by cleaning moulds hot and in place. Today, even the back 1/3 of the blow-mould surface and the entire deep-cavity injection moulds used to make test-tube shaped slugs are cleaned by dry ice blasting whereas it used to have to be cleaned by hand.

Cold Jet dry ice blasting has resulted in optimal equipment performance and increased productivity in the Printing Industry. Cold Jet dry ice blasting systems allow lengthy cleaning processes to be shortened by on-line precision cleaning.

Ink buildup on the gears and deck guides causes poor alignment and results in low print quality and high scrap rates. Cold Jet dry ice blasting can reduce or in some cases eliminate low quality and high scrap rates.

In many plants, the cleaning of the side frames and print deck mechanism is usually avoided until absolutely necessary. Typically, several hours are spent on each color station to scrape and wipe the critical surfaces. With today's modern presses having six to eight color decks, cleaning downtime can easily add up to several thousands of dollars of lost production per cleaning cycle. However, when using Cold Jet dry ice blasting, because the cylinders can be removed to provide easy access to all surfaces, both sides of the deck can be cleaned in as little as 10-15 minutes before going back into production. In addition, dried out drip pans and fountains can easily be cleaned as well.

Printing with fluid inks at high speeds also creates an "ink mist" of fine droplets that comes from the splitting and transfer of the inks from the printing plate to the substrate being printed. These droplets settle on the "between color dryer boxes" and eventually clog the vent slots or nozzles, resulting in a reduced and uneven airflow, which in turn inhibits proper drying. To compensate for this reduced airflow, the press speed is reduced, which immediately results in lost production and lower quality. Not only does Cold Jet dry ice blasting speed up the cleaning process, but it cleans better too.

In a typical cleaning process, manual scraping requires 20-30 man-hours per piece of equipment. Using the Cold Jet dry ice blasting process, the same piece of equipment was cleaned in less than two hours. With this type of speed and efficiency, there is no longer any need to wait for the next shutdown to clean. It is now cost effective to do your cleaning between job changes on the press, giving you more production time and higher production rates.

Cold Jet dry ice blasting replaces the use of dangerous solvents, scrapers, chisels and emery cloths without having to dismantle the press thus eliminating many direct and indirect costs such as downtime hours, poor printing quality, increase scrap, wear of machined parts, and disposal of hazardous waste and solvents.

Cold Jet dry ice blasting has been shown to cut mould-cleaning time by 75% in the Rubber Industry, therefore increasing production time. Cold Jet dry ice blasting systems eliminate the need to remove and reinstall moulds during cleaning, decreasing downtime.

The buildup of fouling residue and mould release agents cause blemishes and unwanted flash to the final part. It also makes it more difficult to hold tolerances on parts, which can lead to increased scrap. Dirty moulds affect not only quality but productivity as well. Rubber parts will stick to the mould during removal, which increases cycle time, and in some cases, mould build-up can lead to over-packing, which in turn can cause internal strains to the tool.

Removing and reinstalling moulds may lead to tool wear, as well as risk damage to the tool during out-of-press handling. The use of Cold Jet dry ice blasting eliminates many sources of mould and tool damage.

Tire manufacturers have seen many benefits in using Cold Jet's dry ice blasting technology, including: reduced production costs of approximately $1 million per facility annually, press downtime reduced by 300% due to in-press cleaning, annual production increase, elimination of the need to hand drill micro vents, near zero-defect levels achieved, reduction in tool damage, and a reduction in the need to re-stamp sidewall lettering.

Cold Jet dry ice blasting can reduce wood press cleaning time by as much as 400%, reducing labor costs as well. Cold Jet dry ice blasting systems eliminate the manual cleaning of presses, dryers and vents, while increasing employee safety and health.

With the traditional cleaning method, multiple workers are involved in a very labor-intensive manual cleaning process using angle grinders during a regularly scheduled maintenance shift.

This traditional cleaning process is dangerous and requires cleaners to work within the machines in very close proximity to residues and residue dust. In addition, manual cleaning is not fully effective as the unreachable parts of the machine simply do not get cleaned.

Cold Jet's dry ice blasting systems clean four times faster than the traditional cleaning methods and are ultimately safer and more cost-effective. The patented dry ice pellets have the mass and density required to conduct a quick, easy, and thorough cleaning.
